I would appreciate a quick RSVP if you are coming so I can cut enough kits. This month we'll also talk about "masking" as well as cutting the right card size for various envelope sizes. This year a photograph was taken of past Executive Directors of the Last Fling. I was ED in 1996, and in this photo are many of my closest friends. The 2010 Last Fling is over now, but I'm already looking forward to 2011. If you have the chance to volunteer in your community, I highly recommend it. You'll meet GREAT lifelong friends and have a good time while doing something positive in your home town. I try to separate the light and dark colors from each other if possible. At this point, if I haven't already chosen fabrics, I can audition fabric choices next to the finished blocks to see what I like best. I do try to use fabrics that pull together all or most of the colors in the t-shirts so the finished quilt looks a bit more cohesive. Sometimes this is easy and sometimes not! :-) Then I cut all the fabric into cornerstones, sashing and borders, using the 60mm rotary cutter and large cutting mat.

Finally I can piece the quilt top together row by row. I use a walking foot and pins to make sure the layers don't slide. I remove the pin from the seam just before sewing over it. I never sew over pins! This can damage your machine needle or worse.

Knee High by the 4th of July

My cute little row of sweet corn was as high as my head on July 4, here in northeast Illinois, USDA Zone 5. We had nice amounts of rain and sunshine throughout June allowing all the garden plants to take off nicely. Now that the July heat is upon us, the tomatoes and peppers are finally producing. This raised bed garden box was built by my husband, and includes a bunny fence. However, I have to admit we have not had a rabbit population here for a number of years now due to coyotes, a natural predator.

I've Joined Stampin' Up!

I've been stamping for many years now, and for a long while I didn't make the time to get "inky" - to set aside a few hours each week to immerse myself in the creative process. Some will not. There are many ways to build your 14" blocks using smaller images.

Sometimes a t-shirt is very small and there just isn't 14" of fabric to work with. In this case, I trim the image down to a nice square, then add a coordinating cotton quilting fabric on all four sides, then trim the entire thing to 14" square. Press seam allowance to the outside. Add it to your block pile!

Long, skinny images can be sewn together in a stack, and then trimmed to 14" square. Four chest sized logos can also be sewn into a square. I usually press the seams OPEN when sewing t-shirts directly to each other to reduce thick/difficult seam intersections.

At this point in the process I have a pretty good idea of how big the quilt will be. Generally I can get a nice sized lap quilt from 9, 12 or 16 blocks. A twin would be 20-24 blocks. Double, 24-30 blocks, and so on.

Once my blocks are made, I sketch out the quilt layout, determining the final size of the quilt and audition coordinating fabrics for the cornerstones, sashing, borders, binding and backing. This can be hand calculated on paper, or I use a program called Electric Quilt to do the same task on the computer. I'm able to enter my finished block size, and play with the size of the sashing and borders to build the quilt out to be the desired size, in this case about 50" x 70" a generous lap quilt. In EQ I can also play with color selections, but I usually do that by hand. I write detailed notes on the printed layout regarding how much fabric is needed, and how it needs to be cut.

I try to choose fabrics that tie together the various colors in the t-shirts so they blend somewhat. I tend toward choosing the brighter colors and so far this has worked very well! Tone on tone fabrics are also great if you have various shades in a particular color.

Next we'll piece the quilt top.

T-Shirt Memory Quilt Tutorial - Part 2

Let's get started!

One shirt at a time, trim off neck, sleeves with seams, side seams, bottom edge, to make a large, rough cut about 18" square.

Layout bolt of stabilizer on cutting mat with bumpy (fusible side) up against wrong side of t-shirt. Give yourself a little extra space around this image for seam allowance and find the next whole number. This will determine your block size! Most of the time my blocks are 14" square. I keep everything in whole numbers as this makes the assembly of the quilt top easier to figure. Trim all blocks to the same size. This is where the large square ruler really comes in handy. You can also place a mark on the ruler at the 7" (halfway) point to help center the image in the square.

T-Shirt Memory Quilt Tutorial - Part 1

What do you do with an ever expanding stack of t-shirts collected over the years from vacations, sporting events, gatherings, school, etc? If I don't have time to get it through my wholesale supplier, I will use a JoAnn's 40% off coupon and buy an similar bolt locally. I figure about 18" of stabilizer per shirt. In reality less may be used but it's always good to have enough stabilizer for a few extra shirts just in case.

A regular household iron will work just fine, but takes much longer than a press. My press is dry (no steam), so I use a squirt bottle to provide some moisture on top of the pressing cloth when I'm fusing shirts. I set the press to a little cooler than cotton, and I press for 10 seconds at a time. My machine beeps at 10 seconds so this is very handy.

Next post - prepping the shirts!

The Laughing Carefree Gull

I had the thrill today of having lunch with my newest client Gail Gersic to celebrate the printing of her first independently published book, "The Laughing Carefree Gull." I created the design and layout of her book, which features a lovely poem she wrote about her granddaughter playing on the shores of Ocean Beach, New Jersey. It is beautifully illustrated by her dear friend Doris Barabas. It was such a treat to work with Gail this year and see her vision come to life, or print I should say! I wish her all the best and many books to come!

Pictured below are Gail Gersic (left), our friend and mentor Marcia Mackenbrock (center), and Jim Ross (right), of Worzalla Printing Company.

Black Bean Salad

This is a recipe I cut out of a magazine a long time ago, and go back to again and again in many variations depending on what's in the pantry. It makes a nice large batch, great for parties and large groups. Pair with two bags of your favorite tortilla chips.

Dump all ingredients in a large bowl and stir. This salad is mild, you can spice it up by adding chili powder, using Rotel tomatoes instead of plain, or adding some fresh jalapeno pepper. I've made it without the garlic and onion for people who don't like those flavors, but it is on the boring side IMHO. I'm getting so I don't measure anything in this anymore, I just grab what I have and mix it up. Oh, and Trader Joe's frozen roasted corn is GREAT in this! Did I mention I love TJs? I'm looking forward to ham sandwiches for days to come!

No affiliation with Trader Joe's, just a big fan. :-)

Bloggers Quilt Festival

The Spring 2010 Bloggers Quilt Festival is now underway, thanks to Amy's Creative Side. I stumbled upon her blog and have had a great time browsing all the blogs and quilt entries, it is truly inspiring! I have not posted to my blog in ages, and this was the perfect opportunity for me to update my look, share a quilt I made, and make a new personal resolution to write nearly every day (well try anyway).

The quilt I'm sharing was made in 2005, and because I'm so busy working, sewing and creating for other people, I rarely get to make anything for myself! This is one of two baby quilts I made in the same style and fabrics. The original was made for my husband's cousin who had a baby boy very prematurely. I loved it so much I made one for myself to keep. The fabric selection is also special to me, it reminds me of my Hilda, a smooth fox terrier who lived to be more than 15 years old. Hilda lived with me before I met my husband and had a family! She is still missed by all of us.

Head on over to Amy's Creative Side to see the rest of the entries in the Bloggers Quilt Festival!

Crockpot Whole Chicken

This super simple technique (can't even call it a recipe really with just 2 ingredients) came from

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/slowcooker/

You'll need a whole roasting chicken, and the seasoning of your choice.

Rinse the chicken and pat it dry, season with your favorite flavors, I used Penzey's Sandwich Sprinkle. Others have used simply salt and pepper, or paprika. No cooking liquid is necessary.

Place chicken in a large crockpot, cover and cook on high for 6 hours, or low for 8-10 hours, or a combination of both. My chicken was done when it was literally falling off the bone, it was SO moist and juicy! I pulled out the chicken and placed it on a cutting board to cool. I was then able to use just my fingers and a fork to harvest all the tender juicy meat.

The girls and I ate it with mashed potatoes the first night, I then used it for chicken nachos, and also of course chicken sandwiches.

The chicken creates an amazing amount of liquid. I saved the stock, strained it and froze it for future use.

YUM!

Scissors Sharpening

Nice quality fabric scissors such as Gingher deserve a little TLC sometimes. This is my daughters' name for what I would really call Braised Teriyaki Chicken (over brown rice).

Preheat oven to 350.

Take a large oven proof skillet or roasting pan (tonight we did 6 pounds of boneless skinless thighs in a Pampered Chef non-stick roasting pan), and brown the any cut of boneless chicken over medium-high heat on the stove top. Season with salt and pepper. Tonight, because of the large amount of meat, I added 2 cups of chicken stock, about 1 cup of store-bought teriyaki sauce, and a small can of crushed pineapple. Transfer dish and bake in oven for at least 1 hour, and check temperature of meat. We would pull it out at 160 minimum. I did pull it out half way through, and turned the thighs.

We often serve this with Trader Joe's Organic Brown Rice (cooks for 3 minutes in the microwave), along with a vegetable. The girls LOVE it, and so did the family tonight. It was fascinating to learn how he came up with the original concept for this series of books, how many times he was rejected, and finally how he overcame many obstacles to become an author who's works have now been published in 30 languages! We also learned a little about the new book due out this fall. Madison was really excited to meet Mr. Kinney! I have a friend (also neighbor and old co-worker) who is now a Stampin' Up Demonstrator. I go to Stamp Club at her home once a month, and we create 2-3 new projects, as well as chat and have a glass of wine (after projects are done). I didn't get any Christmas cards out this year, but did spend some time this month making a handful of "Happy Winter" cards, which are particularly appropriate this year for our region. I'm not really fast at making these but have fun in the process.

For those who want details, the two colorways are Stampin' Up Baja Breeze and Bashful Blue.

Crockpot Chicken with Black Beans

I just put this in the Crock Pot. I'll update this post tonight and let you know how we liked it. The recipe was posted on the "slowcooker" Yahoo group. The person who posted it, originally got it from Recipezaar. Everyone who tried the recipe loved it - so here goes!

Crockpot Chicken with Black Beans

4-5 frozen, boneless chicken breasts

1 (15 1/2 ounce) can black beans

1 (15 ounce) can corn

1 (15 ounce) jar salsa, any kind

1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese

Take 4-5 frozen (yes, frozen) boneless chicken breasts and put into crock pot. Add 1 can of black beans, drained and rinsed, 1 jar of salsa, 1 can of corn drained. Keep in crock pot on high for about 4-5 hours or until chicken is cooked. Add 1 package of cream cheese (just throw it on top) and let sit for about 1/2 hour. Serve over rice, or scoop up with tortilla chips. Some users have omitted the cream cheese and serve with a dollop of sour cream. If using thawed chicken, cooking time may be reduced.

UPDATE: This recipe is great! The only thing I would add would be a topping of very finely diced onion mixed with chopped cilantro, to add color and a little texture. We put this over Trader Joe's frozen brown rice, which is a product I highly recommend, even the kids will eat it. It comes in a box of 3 bags, a bag microwaves in 3 minutes and the results are nutty and perfect.

Sunday Dinner

Before my first daughter was born, we along with my husband's family, started the tradition of gathering for Sunday dinner. It's not formal, but allows us some family time, as well as an excuse to try new recipes, techniques and menus. I plan to share our Sunday Dinner menus on this blog.

This past Sunday we tried a new appliance that we received for Christmas, a multi-cooker, which can brown, slow cook (crock pot style), or pressure cook. We've never done any pressure cooking before so it was going to be an experiment! I checked out a book from the library, Miss Vickie's Big Book of Pressure Cooker Recipesand decided to try "Cola Beef Roast with Sweet Onion au Jus."

I have to be honest, it was scary thinking about the pressure and the steam, plus I was skeptical about a tougher cut of meat (beef round roast) cooking in less than an hour. But VOILA - it worked terrific! The meat was tender and the juice was just like french onion soup. The next day for lunch we used the beef (sliced thin) in panini sandwiches with Munster cheese. YUM!

Note to self: put Miss Vickie's book on my Amazon Wish List. :-)

Creamy Blue Cheese Dressing

I made this recipe last week and we always enjoy it. I'm sort of fussy about store bought salad dressing. I may be crazy, but I feel like I can actually smell the chemicals in some of them, and I don't enjoy any of the added and unnecessary sugar. It's easy and fun to make your own salad dressing. This dressing is great on an iceberg lettuce wedge with just a dash of black pepper to finish it off. Or, it's a terrific dipping sauce for chicken wings.

1 cup sour cream

1 cup mayonnaise

2 Tbsp. milk

1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

1/2 tsp. dry mustard

1/2 tsp. garlic powder

1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. black pepper

4 oz. blue cheese crumbles

In a large bowl, whisk together all ingredients except blue cheese. Add more or less milk as desired to thin the mixture. Stir/fold in the blue cheese crumbles. Cover and refrigerate overnight before serving.

If you are a lover of blue cheese like I am, go to Sam's Club or your favorite warehouse store and buy the large tub of blue cheese crumbles. It's much cheaper per ounce than the grocery store. I end up using it on all sorts of things!

Maggie Mae

Santa brought us a new little friend the week before Christmas, he said he was going to be WAY too busy delivering presents on Christmas eve to care properly for a puppy so she arrived early. We are all in LOVE with this little girl. She is a Boston Terrier, just over 5 months old now, and has various nicknames including: Maggie Mae, Margaret Mildred, Maggie Motorcycle, and Dogzilla just to name a few. We are working on potty training and manners, but cleverly she has already mastered the art of cuddling and sleeping in our bed at night.

Introducing Midwest Creative

Hello Friends!

My name is Lisa Klingbeil (aka Mrs. K). I'm a fairly typical wife and mother living in the upper Midwest. In my spare time, I enjoy any type of creative outlet, including reading, paper crafting, sewing, quilting, needlework, cooking, gardening, hunting for antiques, digital photography, our pets, and the list goes on and on and on! Please join me in this adventure as I share some of my life experiences, creative projects, recipes, home life, and family fun!

I selected the header image for this blog (a photo of my garden this past summer) because at this point, I'm dying for some plant life around here. That won't be happening anytime soon because we have a frozen arctic snowpack of about 10-12" on the ground and the high temperature reached 14 degrees here today. I want you to know how much I love *all* the seasons, but I could really use a little green right now!
